Started my rod bearing job this afternoon on the old 89 with 216K+ miles and a dubious history for the first 189K.

I've seen a lot of the photos posted of bearings, but I don't recall seeing any in this condition so far. So far, cylinders 1 & 2 are changed before stopping for the night. WoW, these are some crappy looking bearings. I guess they explain the cold knock this engine has has since I got it. Of the four bearings removed so far, all are almost ALL copper with some bluing (overheated), and some scuffing on the bearings. The crank journals look fine, so far.

If my son brings my digital camera back in the morning, I'll take some pics and post them. If he doesn't, I'll track him down, kick his butt, and get the camera anyway. :D

PS. Ain't it fun having oil drip in your hair and face while you're trying to work?

when im working under the car, like when i did rod bearings, i wore safety glasses with clear lenses. i have to wear them for work anyway, so it wasnt that much of a bother. the main reason i wear em is because i wear contacts and oil, rust, other road and car grime doesnt feel good in the eyes.

I got hit by several drops of oil straight in the eyes when I was doing rod bearings a couple weeks back. :( Didn't clean the stuff out of my eyes for hours and then later I started remembering the warnings on the back of motor oil bottles "Used motor oil causes cancer". Don't want no eye cancer when I'm 50! cuss

Make sure to ignore the Helms torque spec for the oil pickup tube to oil pump nuts!!!

My safety glasses are well oil spotted after last night. The eyes are fine. The hair took three washes to get the oil out, though.

Where's that boy with my camera? Ya gotta see these bearings...

My safety glasses got lost in my trunk on the way to the rod bearing job. :( I found them after I bought two new pair of safety glasses (which was AFTER I finished the rod bearing job doh ) Oh well, can't have enough safety glasses. I don't know how many jobs I've done where I should be wearing them but I don't because I can't find them. The more pair I scatter around the homestead the more likely a pair will pop up when I need them hahaha!

When I did mine one of my bearings was actually cracked in half. I would suggest an extra tube of the black RTV. Those 2 little ones are just barely enough.

Got 3 through 6 done before lunch.

Interestingly, they looked alot like most of the pics that have been posted. #s 1 & 2 are really worn though.

Where's that boy with my camera?

Steve, let us know how things turn out after you put her back together and fire her up!

Also, what did you have to do to remove the pieces of ceramic out of the exhaust? Hope that "ricer" sound is gone.

Well, it's back together and running.

The knocking is gone now and the engine idles very smoothly.

Still no camera yet...

Ricer exhaust is still there. Couldn't get anything out of it and didn't see any pieces of the cat anywhere. Maybe mine didn't break up after all. I'm beginning to think that the rasp is from the new resonator tube only and that I'll just have to live with it....
