Hey guys. I rarely drive the SHO now, 4k miles just in one year....and when I do drive it I notice that it does not go into overdrive. I have to shut her off then wait two minutes restart and go.....then she'll go into over drive. It is really annoying.....

Temperature gauge barely moves also....does not go near the "L" mark. Are these two related? Is it the ECT sensor that's screwing something up? I last changed that back in 2002. No codes are popping up either.

Thanks guys...

+1. I almost guarantee the thermostat stuck open on you, especially if it's been sitting. A lot of the tranny fluid goes through the radiator, and if it's stuck cold the transmission will take forever to warm up... and it won't shift into OD until the tranny fluid reaches a set temperature.

Change the thermostat (make sure you get one with a jiggle valve on the top) and you'll be fine.

And drive it more often.

It should shift to OD with the engine and trans completely cold, but it will not lock the torque converter until the trans temp reaches "operating temperature".

Have you pulled the codes? There should be at least one stored trans code.

Thanks guys, I'm going to change the thermostat and see what happens.

She won't be driven much more this year....probably a few hundred more miles and that's it.
She'll be going in for winter storage mid October and be taken out next year in March.
In the meantime I'll be driving the Odyssey. :)

I really doubt your thermostat being stuck open is causing your transmission to not to go into OD.

Any solution to this problem ? I have a similar issue in my 95 but now third gear also doesn't engage. Hoping its sensor related.

And I believe you have a better solution? I've seen you a couple times coming in a thread putting doupts into people's solutions that comes in. If you know better then these guys that's been here for years , please put in YOUR better solution.

Thermostat has nothing to do with the shifting. The TC it does.

Here's a list of sensors that may be responsible.

TR Sensor, EPC Solenoid, VSS

The transmission will not shift into OD until the TOT sensor reports a high enough trans oil temperature. The transmission fluid is routed mostly through the radiator, where it is cooled by engine coolant. If the coolant is still really cold because of a stuck open thermostat, it will cause the transmission fluid to take much longer to heat up.

I never said the t-stat WAS his problem, just that it COULD be.

Incorrect.

As Paul mentioned, the TC (torque converter) locking up is effected by tranny fluid temp, not shifting into 4th gear or any other gear.

Shifting pressure is also impacted by TFT, but again, the transmission will still go into 4th even if the tranny fluid is -30*F.

For the OP, the fact that recycling the key fixes the problem suggests an MLP sensor problem to me.
