Recently purchased 1995 Blue 3.2 MTX from the classifieds.

From the ad/emails he made this car out to be flawless with a few minor exceptions.

It was listed with these problems-

-intermittent ignition switch (he said car wouldnt shut off all the time, ignition was fine, car had a remote start system he didnt even know how to work)

-driver window sometimes wouldnt roll down, listed as possible window track problems? it didnt work due to faulty/poorly wired in AUTO DOWN modules (more on this later)

-AC compressor clutch seized

This is fair. I knew of these things going into it. Here are my issues with the sale, that if someone had been driving this car and owned it for any more than a weeks time would have noticed-

-driver window not intermittent, just plain dead. partially due to installation of AUTO DOWN modules that were wired in with electrical tape, and nor formal electrical connectors. These were also not secured, they were just hanging from the harness behind the door panel.

-passenger front window, rolled down, and not up. On my way home with the car I rolled it down for some fresh air, and it stayed that way all the way home (might have just happened, but seeing that this door panel had MANY broken tabs, and two missing screws, I assume this happened in the past.

-driver door panel hanging on by merely the door handle and the lock. I opened the door and it nearly fell on the ground. Not one of the tabs that pushes into the sheet metal were intact, and two screw holes were stripped out.

-driver door speaker is dead, havent traced the problem, but I have replaced the stereo since I bought the car, so it isnt the stereo. Probably due to the hack job wiring on the door harnesses.

-Car listed with an LPM, I asked about it after getting the car home, and I was told he forgot to take it out of the ad. I told him I think he should rectify this and all he said was, "its only like $70 for an unprogrammed LPM anyways". Probably why the car drove like @$$ with an 80mm MAF with no tune and failed emissions horribly.

-Stereo wiring, car listed with an IPOD jack. Im no electrical engineer, but I install radars, GPS, autopilots, fishfinders, LCD TV's, and stereos in boats as one of my main job duties at work. And at no point in time would I ever be proud of a wiring job like this. There were an EXCESSIVE amount of wires stuffed behind the radio. The power connections were made by stripping back the wire, and putting electrical tape over the connections. This is not safe, in a car, in a boat, in a house, or anywhere! If a 12V+ connection were to chafe through a piece of tape, THAT ISNT FUSED, and touch 12V- (ground), that wire WILL catch on fire/melt/burn until something gives. Not cool.

-Power steering reservoir merely zip tied to the wiring harness. Bracket missing. Reservoir sitting on its side, basically dangling from its hoses.

-ATX coolant bottle installed. Because of the shoddy workmanship of this, this is why the power steering reservoir is hanging, AND the battery tray is out of place, and the top bracket that actually holds the battery is no longer bolted to the fender wall.

-Power antenna does not go down, and intermittently goes up. Very annoying for the car wash.

-This is minor, but the car was listed with brand new Blizzaks (which are pretty pricey), and it has a much cheaper model Hankook tires.

-The car was originally listed with Cobra wheels, and the slicers were put on at one point. Fine. BUT WHEN YOU PUT THE SLICERS BACK ON CHECK ALL THE LUG NUTS!!!!!! Two lug nuts, one on left rear, and one on the right front were barely hand tight. I noticed this by seeing that the lugs were barely sticking out of the end of the nuts, when tightened down all the way, the lugs stick out about 1/4"-1/2". I noticed this after driving the car home.

-Emergency brake cable gets stuck once depressed. It does not release at all. I thought the car lost a cylinder the first time I drove away after using. Then the smell of hot brakes led me onto that. Also the e brake pedal is very loose, and does not return to the full 'up' position. Which I have now found to be part of the problem why the remote starter is so testy.

-Last but not least. It may be the smallest thing, but this one got me the most. Car has two gauges, oil pressure and volts. Car listed with the oil sender not installed, ok fine. I asked about a day after I got home. Its been over a month. And I still haven't received. Heres the kicker- I told him I was upset about the LPM and the sender. Thats when he told me, "im not trying to be a paint, buts its only a hundred bucks dude". Thats when I realized what kind of person I just bought a car from. Obviously he wanted to get rid of the car (dropped the price nearly in half in 6 months), and probably hoped no one would catch on. Well I did.

In the end- shame on me for not looking the car over more thoroughly during the sale.
And shame on him for not enlightening me to the obvious issues the car has.
At $3480, some may think I got a good deal. Realistically, $2800 is probably fair considering the SAFETY issues I found, along with the headaches and misc. parts that I will need to make the car what it was listed as.

I really hate when people play up things to be something that they arent.

Oh yeah almost forgot-

This was easily noticed by changing the oil (which I hope he did!), the radiator support is completely rotted. To the point that Im surprised the radiator is still in the car. I made make shift brackets to hold it up until it get warmer so I can weld a new one in.

Most of it seems like small stuff that you could fix pretty easy. But I'd be ****** if i drove all that way back home with loose lug nuts!!!

Yeah its not the fact that I cant fix it. Because I am more than capable, I build all my own cars (see sig). The main thing is the safety issue with the wiring, and the lugs. If something did happen.................

didn't even see this until an asinine post elsewhere (by someone not related to the sale) alluded to it. let me try to clear some things up as ive never tried to scam nanyone or misrepresent myself. I have ample time to inspect the car and tried my best to be as detailed as possible about the car's flaws. even so, i stand by the fact that it was a good deal, and a good car-

Recently purchased 1995 Blue 3.2 MTX from the classifieds.

From the ad/emails he made this car out to be flawless with a few minor exceptions.
not true. i made sure to detail every single thing i knew about when it happened, and lowered my asking price each and every time to compensate for things i didn't get to fix myself
It was listed with these problems-

-intermittent ignition switch (he said car wouldnt shut off all the time, ignition was fine, car had a remote start system he didnt even know how to work)
i was perfectly honest about the symptoms, as well as the fact that the car had the remote start.alarm which i didn't use. the guy i bought it from didn't even remember how to work the remote start, and frankly, since i didn't want to use it, i didn't bother finding out how.
-driver window sometimes wouldnt roll down, listed as possible window track problems? it didnt work due to faulty/poorly wired in AUTO DOWN modules (more on this later)
again i presented the symptoms as i experienced them, and possible solutions. i didn't take the door apart, so i didn't know what the cause was. seems like it was an easy fix though.
-AC compressor clutch seized

This is fair. I knew of these things going into it. Here are my issues with the sale, that if someone had been driving this car and owned it for any more than a weeks time would have noticed-
then why note it?
-driver window not intermittent, just plain dead. partially due to installation of AUTO DOWN modules that were wired in with electrical tape, and nor formal electrical connectors. These were also not secured, they were just hanging from the harness behind the door panel.
i never wire anything dangerously, twisting wire ends as well as securing wires with electrical tape is safe, as long as the electrical tape is as thick as the wire shielding, and done neatly, which it was.

Not one of the tabs that pushes into the sheet metal were intact, and two screw holes were stripped out.
to be honest, i doubt these claims as that's not the condition of thew car when it left my hands.
-driver door speaker is dead, havent traced the problem, but I have replaced the stereo since I bought the car, so it isnt the stereo. Probably due to the hack job wiring on the door harnesses.
again, unsubstantiated, as i would have reported something like this if i experienced it. perhaps the speaker blew afterweards, and the fact of the matter is that window wiring and speaker wiring don't ahve much in common
-Car listed with an LPM, I asked about it after getting the car home, and I was told he forgot to take it out of the ad. I told him I think he should rectify this and all he said was, "its only like $70 for an unprogrammed LPM anyways". Probably why the car drove like @$$ with an 80mm MAF with no tune and failed emissions horribly.
this was my mistake, which i admitted to. the car, however ran great, and passed emmissions each and every time i got it inspected, which carfax can prove. the engine mods on the car are exactly as i bought it.
If a 12V+ connection were to chafe through a piece of tape, THAT ISNT FUSED, and touch 12V- (ground), that wire WILL catch on fire/melt/burn until something gives. Not cool.
the only extra cable was an RCA cable, and fit fine into unised space behind the center console. much like the door wiring, it was safe and well protected.
-Power steering reservoir merely zip tied to the wiring harness. Bracket missing. Reservoir sitting on its side, basically dangling from its hoses.

-ATX coolant bottle installed. Because of the shoddy workmanship of this, this is why the power steering reservoir is hanging, AND the battery tray is out of place, and the top bracket that actually holds the battery is no longer bolted to the fender wall.
find a bracket that works with the 3.2 swap/accessories and reservoirs used in that car. another thing that was documented, and was the exact way i bought the car. previous owner did the swap
-Power antenna does not go down, and intermittently goes up. Very annoying for the car wash.
a common problem with these cars, which i never experienced. i've replaced the antenna mast in my old white SHO for this reason, and there is no way to prove when the plastic toothed cord actually failed
-This is minor, but the car was listed with brand new Blizzaks (which are pretty pricey), and it has a much cheaper model Hankook tires.

there's no way theres ebrake problems when you bought the car. i just put 900 dollars into brakework a few months before it sold, with reciepts to prove it
-Last but not least. It may be the smallest thing, but this one got me the most. Car has two gauges, oil pressure and volts. Car listed with the oil sender not installed, ok fine. Obviously he wanted to get rid of the car (dropped the price nearly in half in 6 months), and probably hoped no one would catch on. Well I did.
yes, i did want to get rid of the car, because having a SHO as a daily driver was too expensive to maintain, put premium gas into, etc.. i made a verbal commitment to send you the oil sender if i'd found it. you agreed to this, and it was repeated in PM's. to be honest, i'm still searching for it, but it's hard with three possible locations in three different states.
In the end- shame on me for not looking the car over more thoroughly during the sale.
And shame on him for not enlightening me to the obvious issues the car has.

look through the list of what that car contains. i could have parted it out and made more money than i did by selling it whole to you. If you really feel that the car isn't up to nuff, part it yourself. the quaifed trans, 3.2, y pipe and borla exhaust, MAF, strut tower bars, LED tails, cowl hood alone would net you in the range of 3k+ and that doesn't even include some of the other performance parts, or all the misc parts a parted SHO can sell, (spoiler, misc trim, seats, etc.)

In the end, it's my word against yours, and it's the internet. I know the condition of the car when i sold it, and i stand behind my honesty before, during, and after the sale. You personally inspected the car and took it for a test drive before the purchase. combine that with a 6 page ad where i provided as much detail and pictures as i could, along with the offer to answer any and all questions and provide more pictures if requested.

i hope the car treats you as well as it treated me, if i do find the oil sender ( i have a hunch it was trashed in my last move accidentally)i'll send it your way.

The most unfortunate part of this to me is that for the myriad of issues noted by the OP, most should have been detected as part of a pre-purchase inspection and test drive. Especially for anyone the least bit familiar with SHOs.

You know what, your absolutley right. Anyone familiar with these cars should be weary of that pesky loose lug nut issue. Forget the crank bolt, check those lug-nuts!

That's why I don't like buying modded cars. I don't think I could remember half of the hack-jobs I had to correct after going through my 93 MTX. Some people just aren't as detail oriented as other people.

Jay, please note that I said MOST of the issues would have been detected in a pre-purchase inspection/test drive.

While the seller may have not been entirely accurate in their description and may have even been incompetent with some things, that doesn't relieve a buyer from doing a full and proper inspection of the car before buying. It's not as if this was a $100 sale...

And who was I to point these items out to? His mother? He wasnt even there for the sale. Which is a whole other topic in itself.

And you show me a person who can find EVERYTHING wrong with a car on inspection, outside, in 6" of snow.

Notice how the lug nuts were not mentioned.................

Perhaps the seller not being there for the sale and the fact that you couldn't perform an adequate inspection of the car due to snow would have made re-scheduling to a later date a sensible course of action.

At almost $4000 for a 14-year-old car, I would never have skipped a thorough inspection and test drive.

Again, I'm not excusing any mis-representation or omissions by the seller, but a buyer has just as much responsibility to verify the condition of the car and not just take someone's word.

I'm sorry you feel that you got screwed in the deal. I don't deny that you may very well have been. But, what's done is done and now you need to concentrate on getting the issues with the car squared away and learning from this experience and applying it to future purchases.

Good luck!
